Start TCF Canada Reading PracticeTCF Canada Reading Test Overview
Your TCF Reading Test, known as Compréhension écrite, measures your ability to understand written French in a variety of communicative situations and at different levels of complexity.
The TCF Canada Reading section consists of 39 multiple-choice questions and takes 60 minutes to complete. Each question has four choices, with only one correct answer. The questions are ordered by increasing difficulty, starting with simple written messages and ending with more complex texts.
The section is not one long text. You are given several pieces of written language and have to find, understand, or make links between them. Examples used in the official test include questions based on everyday notices and messages, a letter, an advertisement, and an informational text of several paragraphs.
What Does the TCF Canada Reading Test Measure?
The TCF Canada Reading Test assesses how well you can understand written French at each level. In the test, you will read texts that start with words you are already familiar with and include increasingly complex pieces of writing that require a higher level of understanding. You will be tested on how well you can:
- Recognise common language, statements, and written expressions.
- Comprehend the meaning of everyday texts, notices, and messages.
- Pick out the important points and relevant details from more complex or longer texts.
- Recognise how concepts, points, and paragraphs are linked together.
- Understand the implied meaning, not just the words visible on the page.
- Work your way up from simple communication to more advanced comprehension of written language.
