CLB / NCLC Score Guide

Understand what your French test score means for Canadian immigration.

What Is CLB?

CLB means Canadian Language Benchmarks and is commonly used for English. For French, the official benchmark is NCLC, which means Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens. Many students say “CLB score” casually, but French test results are officially matched to NCLC levels.

Why NCLC Levels Matter

Your TEF Canada or TCF Canada result is converted into an NCLC level for each skill: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Immigration programs may require a minimum level in each skill, so it is important to prepare evenly.

Common Target Levels

NCLC 5

A lower-intermediate level that may be relevant for some programs or second-language goals.

NCLC 7

A strong intermediate level often important for skilled worker immigration pathways.

NCLC 9

An advanced target level many candidates aim for to strengthen their immigration profile.

NCLC 10+

A high level that requires strong vocabulary, grammar accuracy, fluency, and comprehension speed.

Why Your Lowest Skill Matters

Many students focus on their strongest skill, but one weak skill can reduce the value of the overall result. For example, strong reading will not fully help if your speaking or writing score is below your target. A good study plan should improve all four skills together.

How to Improve Your Score

  • Take a mock test before starting.
  • Set a target level for each skill.
  • Practice reading and listening under timed conditions.
  • Write regularly and review grammar mistakes.
  • Speak out loud every day and record yourself.
  • Learn vocabulary by topic, not random word lists.
  • Review your mistakes every week.
  • Repeat mock tests to track progress.

Score Improvement Mindset

Improving your score is not only about studying more hours. It is about practicing the right skills, reviewing mistakes, and becoming familiar with the exam format. Consistent practice is more effective than last-minute studying.
